Anyone know New York?

Post by Dean »

Hey everybody. I'm moving to New York in a few days and it's such a big city I thought I'd see if anybody knew any good game groups, or lived there. I figure with 8 million people there have got to be a few intelligent game design minded folk around the city.

I play at the Brooklyn Strategist in Carroll Gardens. It's a game store/cafe/club. You do have to pay to play (neighborhood rent 'aint cheap) but the price is pretty reasonable. Right now there's some retroclone games and I think a 4E game being run there.

There's also Nerd NYC (www.nerdnyc.com), which has a con several times a year and a forum for people to meet groups.

Where in the city are you going to be living?

The Twenty Sided Store in Brooklyn has free tables, although it's more mtg/board game oriented. But I think they do RPGs some nights too.

I lived in Manhattan for a summer. Only gaming group was with my college friends though, and we played in my apartment.

Yeah on a trip a week ago I checked out the Strategist, it's selection was insane but their didn't seem like much playspace. I'll visit Twenty Sided Store first thing when I go next week.

I'm probably going to be living in Brooklyn, although if that place doesn't line up I may end up living in Flushing instead which would be slightly unfortunate. Still as long as it's in the city I'm sure I can find some cool people to design with. I mean.....8 million right? Even if one in a million of them know what they're talking about that's 2 D&D groups right there.

I don't live in the city, but Complete Strategist in manhattan has a pretty big selection of mostly board games, but they have a lot of RPG stuff too. No tables, though.

The Compleat Strategist is right by the Empire State Building; they have a huge selection but inconvenient hours. I've heard there's a big playing space in their basement and I know they hosted a wargaming club at one point.

The Brooklyn Strategist is in Carroll Gardens; it's smaller and it's business model is focused more on playing games than selling them. Their staff will teach you games and play with you if you need an extra person. It costs 15$ a person for four hours. Alternatively you can get a membership for 25$/month.

Queens has gamers too. (A friend of mine is in a Pathfinder game in Astoria but it's the kind of game where the sign your rogue has tripped the ambush is the DM taking a huge bong hit.
